Earth Day, a day dedicated to environmental action, takes place this year on Thursday, April 22. Earth Day’s mission is to help individuals and organizations reduce their impact on the environment. Each year, this campaign aims to raise awareness among as many citizens and organizations across the country as possible and to encourage people to take action.

At Fairmont Pacific Rim, our Planet 21 team has been busy behind the scenes working hard towards a goal of becoming a 100% single-use plastic free organization by March 2022, given the heightened safety measures around COVID-19. Currently the hotel is 85% to reaching its target goal. Guests booking at night at the hotel from April 22 – April 30, 2021 have the opportunity to support our local partner, Ocean Wise Conservation Association, with a charitable contribution of $20.00 CAD in exchange for a 3:00pm late check-out. Book a night at Fairmont Pacific Rim here.

Proudly awarded the 5-Green Key rating within the first year of operation, Fairmont Pacific Rim is committed to minimizing the hotel’s footprint on the planet. The hotel is a proud member of Ocean Wise, an independent charitable non-profit focused on tackling three major ocean challenges: overfishing, ocean pollution, and climate change. Wherever possible, the hotel serves Ocean Wise seafood working alongside the Vancouver Aquarium. The RawBar, located inside The Lobby Lounge, is also Vancouver’s first 100% Ocean Wise sushi destination.

While effective waste management comes with challenges, Fairmont Pacific Rim continues to reduce and divert waste and identify other eco-friendly opportunities. The hotel has implemented iPad devices in all 367 guestrooms, allowing guests to make spa reservations, order in-room dining, access guestroom controls, view all hotel menus and hotel activities from the comfort of their room. The hotel introduced a mobile check-in service that reduces an abundance of paper while diverting waste as guests review the folio directly from the iPad.

A fleet of BMW cruise and electric bicycles are readily available for guests to explore Vancouver while reducing their carbon footprint (please note, currently the use of the hotel BMW bicycles are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19 protocols). Fairmont Pacific Rim also offers charging stations for electric vehicles, encouraging eco-friendly transportation.

Botanist Executive Chef Hector Laguna has created a no waste vegetable stock recipe that stops kitchen scraps from becoming food waste and makes a delicious veggie stock in the process. The at-home recipe can be found here.
