In March 2015, Fairmont Pacific Rim unveiled 16.480 by Omer Arbel in our main entrance. On any given day, you can see the best collection of really beautiful cars in Vancouver, so owner and developer Ian Gillespie knew the space resonated with people and something special needed to be there.
Gillespie had gotten to know Arbel and went to his practice and got to understand what he was doing. They had a conversation about what Gillespie was trying to achieve in the entrance way and he came away with some sketches. From there, everything happened very quickly with the exception of the ground plane. What is now burnt wood was originally going to be stone, when the artists came up with the better idea of burnt wood, which plays homage to what was happening at the turn of the century in Gastown – the concept really gravitated to both artists and this piece is one of Gillespie’s favourite he’s done to date.
